Meet Your Passionate Piano Teacher

Music is a lifelong pleasure. Instead of just enjoying it, why not be involved in making it by learning to play the piano. With over 30 years of experience, I am passionate about helping my students achieve their goals and reach their full potential.

Hello

My name is Wendy Chan. I have been a piano teacher since 1994, and am still passionate about imparting my knowledge and skills to students of various ages. I enjoy listening to music of different genres, as well as baking and taking photographs with my DSLR camera.

My Story

I started learning the piano at the age of 7. Since then, my pursuit of music never stops, although I took a break from piano lessons in my teenage years. I passed my grade 8 piano and theory exams in my early 20s. Then I moved on to study music literacy and piano performance at diploma level, and achieved my AMusTCL (theory) and ATCL (piano solo) qualifications from Trinity College London. I also attained a diploma in Piano Teaching from the Royal Schools of Music. In 2016, I participated in and completed the Suzuki Piano Volumes 1 & 2 teacher training. Most of my students started learning from me at a young age and continued right through their secondary-school (high school) or pre-university years. We have established good teacher-student relationships and they have achieved their desired goals. I would say that the learning process is more important than getting the highest marks in exams. Through learning the piano, besides being exposed to different musical styles and other musical knowledge, they also learn patience, perseverance, problem-solving skills and much more. As a result, their characters and confidence are also built up to be better persons. This is what I hope for all my students.

I take every lesson seriously. Depending on the character and learning pace of each individual student, my teaching method may vary slightly. I emphasize on building a solid foundation in the early stages of learning, particularly in rhythm, reading notation and theory. This will make learning easier in the later stages. For young students, any aspect of learning that needs attention will be communicated to their parents. I also write down notes on their notebooks for every lesson. I really appreciate parents who show support and encouragement to their children throughout the learning process. Setting up a good environment with a proper instrument at home is crucial to every student's progress. I welcome anyone who shows an interest in learning the piano from the age of 6 to 60, preferably from beginner or intermediate level.

TESTIMONIALS

Joscelyn Lim, parent

Teacher Wendy is very patient with my daughter and accommodating to her schedule. I'm glad my daughter did well in her piano and grew to love piano even in the midst of her many demanding commitments. Teacher Wendy has her gentle way to connect with my girl too. Thank you!

Sharon Lam, student

Ms Chan’s support, dedication and structured lessons helped me as a pri-sec school child get the ABRSM Grade 8 certification.

Her approach, which incorporates space for students choice in the learning process, allowed me to explore musical styles that resonated with me. This exploration, alongside other influences, helped cultivate a love for music.

April San, student

It was back in 2013 when Ms Chan was my piano teacher. I have changed many teachers before her and I have not found one like her since. Unlike most, I had to undergo re-learning as I did not start music properly, until I was in my teens - and Ms Chan had shown incredible skills, passion, patience and kindness towards me. [i.e. she had to tolerate through episodes of my laziness and lack of practice of scales, ahaha] 😂
